Renewing your MMJ Card Annually

How Renewing Your Medical Card Works

Once you have your medical card, you will be able to purchase medical cannabis at any PA dispensary for 1 year, at which time your current card will expire. Thankfully, renewing your card is a simpler, quicker process than a completely new registration.

You may renew your card up any time within 60 days of its expiration and in most cases you can still renew months after your card is no longer valid.

Renewing your card requires you:

  • Update your address in the Department of Health Patient Portal
  • to make an appointment with a certifying practitioner (Herbal Care Rx, for example) for your recertification and,
  • to pay the Department of Health for your new card.

To avoid disruptions to fulfilling your medical marijuana needs, we recommend beginning the renewing process between 30-60 days before your card's expiration date since it can take up to 2-4 weeks for new cards to be processed and shipped to you.

You'll only need a few things before you begin:

  • Access to a PC Computer with an internet connection, either a desktop or laptop (not a phone or mobile device).

  • Your login info to your Department of Health account. If you have forgotten your username and password, you can have those retrieved for you by selecting "Forgot your username or password?"

  • Access to the email address you used to register initially with the Department of Health

Go to www.medicalmarijuana.pa.gov , and click on "Apply for ID/Access Account", or simply click on the button below. There will be an option on the right-hand side called Returning Users. Enter your login info there.

In total, you should expect to pay $125 annually, $75 for the recertification and $50 to the DOH for a new card. If you are a beneficiary of SNAP/WIC/PACE/MEDICARE/CHIP, the DOH will waive the card fee and your renewal will be $75.

Contacting the PA DoH

If you have having technical or other difficulties with the Department of Health website or process, the best way to get help currently is to call their helpline at 888-733-5595.

Press 3 for registration issues, and then 9 to speak to a human.

Renewing Patient FAQs

  1. Do I need my Patient ID Number: If you are renewing your medical marijuana card you will not need your patient ID number for a re-certification.
  2. I went to the Department of Health website and tried to pay for my new card, but it wouldn't let me: Although the DOH will allow you to be recertified by a practitioner 60-days before your expiration date, they will only allow you to pay for a new card within 30-days of your expiration
  3. I was recertified by a doctor several weeks ago and I still haven't received my new card from the DoH: The first thing we recommend is that you log into your Department of Health account and click the tab that says "My Profile". There should be a box that has a description of your card status. It will tell you if your card is being processed, has been shipped, etc. If you don't see anything, go to the "Make a Payment" tab and confirm that you paid the Department of Health for your new card. Sometimes patients forget to pay for their new card in addition to their recertification appointment.
  4. I have a previous MMJ card but I have never
