How to renew your PA MMJ Card

A step-by-step Guide to the online renewal process

Thankfully, renewing your card is a simpler, faster process than a completely new registration.

To renew your medical card, the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) requires you to undergo an annual medical recertification, as well as to pay their annual licensing fee. If you have had a change in address since your last card, you will also need to update your address in the Department of Health Patient Portal.

You'll only need a few things before you begin:

  • Access to a computer with an internet connection, either a desktop or laptop (not a phone or mobile device).

  • Your login info to your Department of Health account. If you have forgotten your username and password, you can have those retrieved for you by selecting "Forgot your username or password?"

  • Access to the email address you used to create your online account with the Department of Health.

Go to www.medicalmarijuana.pa.gov , and click on "Apply for ID/Access Account", or simply click on the button below. There will be an option on the right-hand side called Returning Users. Enter your login info there. Once you have paid your annual renewal fee, you may book your appointment with us! Select "Renewing MMJ Patient" on the form below.

Contacting the PA DoH

If you are having technical or other difficulties with the Department of Health website or process, the best way to get help currently is to call their helpline at 888-733-5595.

Press 3 for registration issues, and then 9 to speak to a human.

When to renew a card

  1. When can I begin renewing my MMJ card? You can have your medical renewal appointment within 60 days before your card’s expiration date, and you can pay the DOH their fee within 30 days before your card expires.
  2. If I renew my card early, will my new expiration date start earlier too? As long as your current card has not yet expired, your new card will have a start date that lines up with your existing card’s expiration date, and you should continue to use your existing card until it expires. You will not lose any of your old card's valid days by renewing early.
  3. If my card expired months ago, am I considered a new patient or do I still count as a renewing patient? If you have ever had an active MMJ Card in Pennsylvania you are considered a renewing patient, even if your card has expired long before you can renew it.
  4. I went to the Department of Health website and tried to pay for my new card, but it wouldn't let me: Although the DOH will allow you to be recertified by a practitioner 60-days before your expiration date, they will only allow you to pay for a new card within 30-days of your expiration

Patient Documentation

  1. Do I need my Patient ID Number? If you are renewing your medical marijuana card you will not need your patient ID number for a re-certification.
  2. I filled out an intake form with you last year. Do I still have to fill out one this year? Yes, to ensure proper patient care standards and to conform with medical regulations, you will need to complete a patient intake questionnaire each year you renew your card.
  3. I need to update my health information to include new conditions. Will I need to bring additional documentation for that? No, once you have completed your patient intake questionnaire there is no need to provide additional documentation.

Where is my card?

  1. I was recertified by a doctor several weeks ago and I still haven't received my new card from the DoH: The first thing we recommend is that you log into your Department of Health account and click the tab that says "My Profile". There should be a box that has a description of your card status. It will tell you if your card is being processed, has been shipped, etc. If you don't see anything, go to the "Make a Payment" tab and confirm that you paid the Department of Health for your new card. Sometimes patients forget to pay for their new card in addition to their recertification appointment.
  2. I checked and I paid for my renewal but my certification is still not updated. Send us an email at help@herbalcarerx.com. Your certifying doctor will check on your certification in the Department of Health database.

Paying for your renewal

  1. I paid the renewal fee to the DoH online but when I tried booking my recertification appointment I was asked to pay again. A common point of confusion is that there are actually two entities: the State-run Department of Health, and us, private medical doctors. The state has an annual fee for the card to be printed, and the doctor has an annual fee for providing the recertification.
  2. I'm confused about how much it costs to renew my card. In total, you should expect to pay $125 annually, $75 for the recertification from us, and $50 to the DOH for a new card. If you are a beneficiary of Medicaid, PACE/PACENET, CHIP, SNAP, or WIC, the DOH will waive the card fee and your renewal will be $75.

When you're ready, let us know!

We will be happy to find a convenient call-time for your medical marijuana recertification.
