Renewing Your Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card

Book Your Card Renewal Today

What You'll Need to Get Your Recertification Started

Thankfully, renewing your card is a simpler, faster process than a completely new registration.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health requires you to undergo an annual medical recertification, as well as to pay their annual licensing fee for your card renewal. If you have had a change in address since your last card, you will also need to update your address in the Department of Health Patient Portal.

You'll need the following before your start:

  • Access to the internet from a desktop computer, tablet, or smartphone

  • Your Department of Health (DoH) login info. If you have forgotten your username and password, you can have those retrieved for you by selecting "Forgot your username or password?" on the login page.

  • Access to the email address used to create your DoH account profile.

Once you have all of the above, you can follow the simple steps in the section below. If you're having issues please check out our FAQ section here. There are answers to common issues patients might experience when trying to renew their marijuana cards, and we may have what you're looking for!

Contacting the PA DoH

If you are having technical or other difficulties with the Department of Health website or process, the best way to get help currently is to call their helpline at 888-733-5595.

Press 3 for registration issues, and then 9 to speak to a human.

When to Renew Your Card

You can have your medical renewal appointment within 60 days before your card’s expiration date, and you can pay the DOH their fee 30-days before the anniversary of your last payment. Please take a look at #3 in our step-by-step guide above.

Often, but not always, this date is also 30 days before your card expires.

As long as your current card has not yet expired, your new card will have a start date that lines up with your existing card’s expiration date. You should continue to use your existing card until it expires. You will not lose any of your old card's valid days by renewing early.

If you have ever had an active MMJ Card in Pennsylvania you are considered a renewing patient, even if your card has expired long before you can renew it.

Although the DOH will allow you to be recertified by a practitioner 60-days before your expiration date, they will only allow you to pay for a new card within 30-days of your expiration. Check your Annual Fee Due Date on your DoH Profile page.

Patient Documentation Requirements

If you are renewing your medical marijuana card you will not need your patient ID number for a re-certification.

No, once you have completed your patient intake questionnaire there is no need to provide additional documentation.

Yes, to ensure proper patient care standards and to conform with medical regulations, you will need to complete a patient intake questionnaire each year you renew your card.

Your MMJ Card Hasn't Arrived Yet

The first thing we recommend is that you log into your Department of Health account and click the tab that says "My Profile". There should be a box that has a description of your card status. It will tell you if your card is being processed, has been shipped, etc. If you don't see anything, go to the "Make a Payment" tab and confirm that you paid the Department of Health for your new card. Sometimes patients forget to pay for their new card in addition to their recertification appointment.

Send us an email at help@herbalcarerx.com. Your certifying doctor will check on your certification in the Department of Health database.

Check the address listed in your DoH account; if you have moved and have not updated your address in the DoH system, it's possible that your card has been shipped to the wrong address. Please contact the Department of Health using their hotline number.

However, if your address is correct, your card is listed as "shipped", and your certification has been renewed, it's possible that your card has been delayed by disruptions to the postal service or has been lost in the mail.

After three weeks have passed since your certification and card payment, an option will appear on your account profile to have a replacement card printed and shipped.

Paying for Your Card Renewal

A common point of confusion is that there are actually two different entities: the Pennsylvania State Department of Health, and Herbal Care Rx, privately operating medical doctors. The state has an annual fee for the card to be printed, and the doctor has an annual fee for providing the recertification. These are two separate payments.

Generally speaking, you should expect to pay a total $125 annually: $75 for the recertification from us, and $50 to the DOH for a new card.

If you are a beneficiary of Medicaid, PACE/PACENET, CHIP, SNAP, or WIC, the DOH will waive the card fee completely, and your certification renewal will be $75. Your Department of Health Account

The Department of Health will send you an email to reset your password if you forget it. You can use this link here: https://padohmmp.custhelp.com/app/utils/account_assistance

The Department of Health will send you an email containing your registered username if you forget it. You can use this link here: https://padohmmp.custhelp.com/app/utils/account_assistance

Your card will be mailed to the address that is listed on your Department of Health account. If you have moved, you will need to update your account profile with your current address before you renew your card to make sure it arrives at the correct address.

We find that for various reasons, patients occasionally lose access to the email they originally used to register their accounts. This is a big problem because patients can't receive communication from the Department of Health and can't request a password reset to their accounts without it. Here's a short list of some examples we've encountered:

  • Patients change their primary email and lose track of their old one
  • Patients create an email address specifically for the purposes of registering and forget or lose access to that email.
  • A relative or friend's email was used to create the account and the patient no longer has access to them or has forgotten whose email was used.
  • Patients forget the passwords to their primary email addresses and are unable to recover it.

One of the benefits to staying with us year-after-year for your certifications is that we can help you research which email you used previously if you forget. We can also walk you through some steps to help you reset your password or otherwise recover access if you're finding those steps difficult or confusing. We've also found the Department of Health very helpful if you contact them via their hotline. They have the most direct access to help you change the email account on file and regain access to your DoH login.

We will be happy to find a convenient call-time for your medical marijuana recertification.
