Frequently Asked Questions

A cannabis plant

Can I register online before I see one of the certifying providers?

Yes, you should register and have your patient ID number prior to your appointment. Please let us know if you need help with this step.

I'd like to register as a caregiver for a patient in pennsylvania. Where can I find out more?

Because many caregivers have similar questions and confusions about the process of registering with the PA Department of Health and the role of caregivers in the medical marijuana program, we wrote an article to help! Take a look here at  the Ins-And-Outs of Being a Caregiver. If you still have questions, feel free to contact us and let us know.

What else should I know before my certification appointment?

If you feel like you still have questions about the process or what the expectations for your appointment might be, check out our page dedicated to learning more about the consultation before booking an appointment with a doctor.

What does the PA Department of Health charge for a medical card?

In addition to the fee for your certification, the DoH charges $50 to have your card processed and mailed to you. As of this year, if you qualify for any of the following, the DoH will waive the cost of your card and send it to you free of charge: Medicaid, PACE/PACENET, CHIP, SNAP, WIC.

What constitutes basic documentation of my qualifying condition?

Basic documentation is defined as any document from any health care provider/PCP/Specialist/Nurse practitioner/Behavioral health counselor/etc. that simply states your name and your qualifying condition or illness. Some examples are: After-visit summary given to you after a doctor's visit; a print-out of your diagnoses from a patient portal; an imaging report; etc.  This documentation does not have to be in-depth. If you don't have access to documentation, we may still be able to help you get your card. Please ask us for more information.

How do I order my patient ID card?

Log in as a returning user to the PA DOH website with the username and  password that you created when you registered. Usernames and passwords  are case-sensitive. Click the ‘Make Payment’ tab and follow the prompts  to enter payment information. The annual fee for a patient or caregiver  ID card is $50. Individuals who participate in Medicaid, SSI, PACE,  CHIP, SNAP, WIC, and PACE/PACENET qualify for a full fee waiver, but  must still confirm on the website that they are enrolled in at least one  of those programs. A confirmation will appear when you have  successfully paid for the medical cannabis ID card.

When will I receive my patient ID card?

You should receive your card approximately 10-14 days after you order it online. The card will be mailed to the address listed in your Patient Profile.

Now that I Have received my card, Where can I USe it to get medical cannabis?

Once you have received your medical marijuana ID card, you can purchase medical cannabis at any dispensary in Pennsylvania. Some dispensaries require an appointment for your first visit. Here is a map of dispensaries in the area: Click Here

Should I be keeping a log of my cannabis use?

Once a certification has been established, it's highly recommended that you keep a log of your usage to better help your doctor track effectiveness of the prescribed dosage and subsequent positive or negative impact on your medical condition.  We made a downloadable template for a log you can print out and try for your own use here.
